East Asia

Political-

  • In 1947 North and South Korea, officially proclaimed themselves as two separate nations.
  • In the North the Soviet Union helped set up a communist dictatorship, and in the South the U.S. helped set up a democratic republic.
  • In 1950 North Korea invaded the South and the Korean War was fought for 3 years.
  • Today Kim Jong-Un is the dictator of North Korea and Park Geun-hye is the President of South Korea, and she is the first woman to be elected as president.
  • The Cultural Revolution in China ended in 1976, when Mao Zedong died, and in 1977 Deng Xiaping gained power as the leader of Moderates who wanted to restore order and economic growth in China.
  • Under Deng, the Chinese government established diplomatic relations with the U.S, increased China's world wide trade, made reforms such as allowing farmers to own land, released many prisoners and reduced the police force's power. But the government was still not willing to give up any of its basic power.
  • The Chinese Communist party still continues to hold the real power in China.
  • Today, Xi Jinping is president of the People's Republic of China.
  • Protesters calling for democracy in Tiananmen Square were attacked by the Chinese military in 1989, hundreds of people were killed and thousands wounded. Since then efforts have been made to help the people of China in their struggle for human rights.
  • After World War II, the U.S occupied Japan, and Douglas MacArthur helped set up a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary government and a separate judiciary.
  • The parliament is called the Diet, and the House of Representatives holds most of the power. The Diet chooses the Country's prime minister, who is then appointed by the Emperor.
  • The constitution states that the position of the Emperor is symbolic, and has limited power, but many people see the Emperor as partly divine.

Religion-

  • Buddhism, generally, continued to be a major influence in Chinese religious life. In the earlier part of the twentieth century, there was an attempt to modernise and reform the tradition in order to attract wider support. One of the most well-known reformists was Tai-xu, a monk noted for his Buddhist scholarship. Besides introducing many reforms in the monastic community, he also introduced Western-style education, which included the study of secular subjects and foreign languages for Buddhists.
  • In the nineteen-sixties, under the People's Republic, Buddhism was suppressed. Many monasteries were closed and monks and nuns returned to lay life. In recent years, a more liberal policy regarding religion has led to a growth of interest in the practice of Buddhism.
  • With the collapse of the Yi Dynasty, Korea came under Japanese control. The Japanese who came to Korea introduced their own forms of Buddhism, which included the tradition of the married clergy. As a result, some monks in Korea broke away from their tradition of celibacy.
  • After the Qing Dynasty fell in 1911, Muslims were able to practice their faith. However, during the Cultural Revolution in China (1966 – 1976), religion in all its forms was brutally suppressed, which included the defacement of mosques and other places of worship.
